Motorcycle safety tips
By GANNETT NEWS SERVICE
Novice motorcyclists are prone to errors that can result in serious injury. Here are some tips on how to avoid common mistakes:
• Ride where you can be seen and avoid motorists’ blind spots.
• Never share a lane with a car or drive on the shoulder.
• Always signal before changing lanes, and never weave between lanes.
• Be aware that riding with a passenger changes the way a motorcycle handles and requires more skill than riding alone.
• Keep your eyes where you want the bike to go. Your bike will follow your eyes.
• Learn how to properly bank through turns. Steering with the handlebars alone could tip the bike.
• Take turns slower than you think is necessary.
• Complete a motorcycle training course and wear a U.S. Department of Transportation-certified helmet and protective gear.
